Choosing the right hob is an important decision for any kitchen. Whether you’re renovating your kitchen or planning a new setup, understanding what you’re looking for can help you find a hob that fits both your cooking style and your home.

This guide breaks down different key features and considerations to help you make the right choice.

Why Choose a Gas Hob?

Gas hobs remain a popular choice for many Singaporean households due to its visual, open flame and intuitive, instant heat control, making it easier to manage different cooking techniques such as stir-frying, simmering, or searing. They are highly versatile and work with almost all types of cookware without compatibility concerns.

They also bring many a sense of familiarity — a traditional way of cooking that has been passed down through generations.

Key Features to Look Out For

Burner Type and Power

Different burners serve a different purpose, and knowing what features you want will help in the long run.

  • Single Ring

A common type of burner found in many standard stoves. It features one circular flame ring that comes in small and medium sizes. Single ring burners are suitable for cooking dishes which do not require strong fire power or for use on small-medium sized cookware.

  • Double Ring / Normal Triple Ring: Wok Burner

A double ring / Normal Triple Ring wok burner has an inner and outer ring and are usually bigger in size. This design produces a higher heat output and overall better heat distribution, making it great for high-heat techniques like stir frying, wok frying and sautéing. For most of Tecno’s wok burners, they also come with Variable Valve System (V.V.S) Technology so the large outer ring can be controlled and turned off, allowing these wok burners to double up as small burners used for simmering or slow cooking.

  • Double Ring: Inferno Burner

The inferno burner is essentially a stronger version of the wok burner that is unique to Tecno Singapore. It is designed in mind to deliver extremely high heat in a short amount of time, perfect for tasks such as searing meat or wok/deep frying. It is also equipped with V.V.S technology for added versatility.

  • True Triple Ring

This burner has 3 concentrated rings of fire which provides the highest heat level output and most even heat distribution across larger cookwares. The difference between the True Triple Ring burners and a normal triple ring burner is that for the former, the additional ring is powered by an additional gas pipe, whereas for the latter, it is essentially a double ring burner with an extra ring of holes. This allows it to not only have added power, but also the ability for the 3 rings to be adjusted/turned off separately.

Ignition Type

  • Electric Igniters

More commonly found in older gas stoves, where a wire carries current from the socket to the igniter, creating a spark that lights the gas. The hassle here is the requirement of a power socket in the cabinet.

  • Battery Igniters

Battery igniters are a common and practical option in many modern homes, especially those that don’t require a direct electrical connection. They are powered by replaceable batteries (AA/D batteries), offering a reliable and convenient option for many. It is generally the preferred option today.

Hob Material

The surface of your hob plays an important role in both aesthetics and day-to-day maintenance.

  • Stainless Steel

A practical and durable choice as it is resistant to heat and wear, making it suitable, everyday cooking. It is less likely to crack or chip, but it may show scratches and or fingerprints over time. Here at Tecno, our stainless steel hobs are usually designed with a flatter surface to make cleaning easier.

  • Tempered Glass

A popular choice for modern kitchens as it offers a sleek and refined appearance. It is generally easy to clean due to its smooth surface, though it requires careful handling to prevent visible smudges or stains.

Variable Valve System (VVS)

[also called Dual Flame Control]

A Variable Valve System (VVS) allows for precise control by allowing the inner and outer rings of a dual-ring burner to be adjusted independently.

This allows you to switch between high heat for fast cooking and lower heat for gentle cooking, providing greater precision and flexibility.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Gas Hob

  • Kitchen Setup (installation)

Gas hobs require proper gas supply and should always be installed by qualified professionals. It’s also important to ensure your countertop and surrounding space are suitable for the model you choose.

If your kitchen has a pre-installed hob (induction/gas), it is also important to ensure that the new gas hob you’re looking at, fits the cut out size of your current hob.

If you’re unsure if your kitchen setup is suitable, feel free to contact the Tecno hotline at +65 6552 3318 for advice.

  • Size and burner configuration

Gas hobs come in various sizes and burner layouts, from compact models to wider options with multiple burners. The best choice for your kitchen depends on your available space and how many dishes you usually prepare at once (cooking habits).

  • Safety features

Safety Valve [also called Flame Failure Device (FFD)]

It is a built-in safety mechanism to automatically stop the gas supply if the flame goes out unexpectedly due to spillage or wind. In Singapore, this has been a required safety feature since 1 August 2018, making it an essential feature when selecting a gas hob. You can usually identify it as a small metal probe or sensor near the flame ring or by checking your product manual or model specifications.

The safety valve mechanism usually requires the user to press down and hold the knob in place for a few seconds after the fire comes out. This gives enough time for the sensor to activate. Luckily, unlike mass market products, most of our hobs at Tecno come with an instant ignition safety valve, meaning you may let go of the knob the moment the fire ignites.

Final Thoughts

A gas hob remains a reliable and versatile choice for many, offering a familiar cooking experience with strong flame control and compatibility with all cookware. By understanding the key features and considerations, you can choose a model that best fits your cooking habits.
